Giulio Caesare - Dict. Perpetuo
A photo of the statue dedicated to Julius Caesar on Via dei Fori Imperiali in Rome. What many do not know is that though the statue itself may be ancient, the base is actually Fascist propoganda. The elegant letter shapes are unlike ancient Roman epigraphy.
"Anno x a fascibus renovatis" means "in the tenth year since the fasces were renewed," i.e., the tenth year of the Fascist regime in Italy. In other words, this is a piece of Fascist propaganda purporting to link Mussolini's regime to ancient Roman imperialism. The tenth year of the Fascist regime would be 1932 or 1933. Caesar's name in an ancient Roman inscription would have included his father's and grandfather's names, something like:
C. IVLIVS C. FIL. C. NEP. CAESAR
"Dict. Perpetuo" (Dictator for Life) would not have been used as a title in an ancient inscription. It's an attempt to liken Mussolini to Caesar.
